fætal
free me from my fear filled world
buried deep in inner quarrel
failure focused, fallen furled
cried forgotten fragile pearl

pierce the eye of the needle
buried yes but sown seeds grow
futile fertile, fatal fetal?
down is up, no matter how low

E X I T
"exit" is an artistic representation of a bruise. More often than not, it is perceived simply as a bold colored koi fish and nothing more. But upon sharing its true meaning, people’s impressions of the painting change dramatically.
Picture
Ambiguity is sometimes highly important to an artist. This is one of those cases, so very little back story will be provided on what exactly inspired this work of art.

We have all had a bruise. They start as a visually hidden pain, but over time, as our blood slowly percolates beneath the surface of our skin, they reveal themselves. If severe enough, they appear in various shades of fuchsia, purple, and even black. The koi’s multilayered background is symbolic of this phase of bruising. As a bruise heals, it turns green, yellow and everything in between. It  looks unhealthy, but at this point the pain has dulled and full recovery is close at hand.

Interpret exit any way you would like. If you choose to apply the meaning shared, let it be a comfort to that you are not alone. Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever it is that brings you pain, literal or figurative,
I hope you find the exit.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Leave a comment.

MILITIA
I am an artist, not a fashion designer or salesman. When the idea to add a little swag to the artist shoppe weaseled its way into my plans, the only way to approach it was as an artist. This felt a little tricky though. After all, my artwork is highly emotional and often rooted in some pretty heavy topics. This discouraged me but then I realized something. None of us can avoid the harsher realities of life and that makes somewhat melancholy looking art relatable, right?

Picture
ilitia is not just product, it is a concept. Three paintings have been chosen for this project (brother, sister, and resume). All of them are symbolic of common crossroads in life. (brother) Having to make a life changing decision, (sister) realizing unhealed wounds are keeping you from living fully in the present, and (resume) reaching rock bottom with no hope for the future; in desperate need of help . Welcome to the human condition.

Forks in the road are an opportunity for introspection and growth. As depicted in the paintings, you are a heap on the ground today but if you look closely, the hints of a better tomorrow are right in front of you. Hardship can be forged into custom armor for future combat. Making tough decisions is hard but the courage gained is invaluable. Living in the past is a trap but you can choose to honor it as lessons learned. Get better at riding out the lows by acknowledging that it is okay to accept or ask for help. Inner strength is something that grows whether earned, given, or borrowed.

It often feels as if we are losing touch with our ability to relate to one another. This is alarming. It is time to form a militia. Let the messages within the artwork be a reminder that we are much more alike than we are different. Life is a shared experience. With this understanding in our hearts we can band together, as human beings, in action against the chaos. The Militia Collection is about starting the conversation. Strolling around with a uniquely morose image across your chest can be a real conversation starter. You can tell those who comment that you purchased it from this really moody artist who, more than anything, wants to bring a little more conversation and empathy to the table we call life. I cannot help but feel that an interesting chat, triggered by an artsy article of clothing, is somehow charming and good. Perhaps, in some small way, it could help make the world a better place. A lofty hope but a well-intentioned one.

Thank you for reading. You know artists. We are always feeling so misunderstood. Thought I would try and explain myself, but just a little. There has to be some mystery. You should have fun interpreting the art for yourself too.
Check out the Militia Collection.

Thank you for bearing with me as I share a thought.
People often make broad generalizations about others based on very few factors. Everyone is guilty, and all have been victims, of this very human tendency. We even do it to ourselves. Seems safe to say that this behavior does not have any redeeming qualities. It is cruel and can be stifling. No one appreciates being put in a box.

love

Art is extremely personal. This is why parting with my work can be very difficult and even emotional. I’ve often described it as selling pages from my journal. This attitude started changing a few years back when I was visiting The Art Institute of Chicago. There I had the privilege of viewing some of Édouard Manet’s portrait paintings that have inspired me and influenced my work for years with their symbolic story telling. This brought me to a realization. Manet died in 1883 yet his stories and legacy lives on through his art that inspires so many. Will my work have a legacy? Would this ever happen if I cannot let go of it or share my stories?

sold my painting ‘love’ last week. It was hard. She is a glinting jewel born in the darkness. ‘love’ is a story about abuse and isolation. Her hollow, though piecing, dark eye looks back and up looking for help. Her body keeps the safety of a shielded posture. This symbolizes that she is trying to ask for help but she is still vulnerable and afraid. Her ghostly body blends into the background while the few solid parts of her pixelate as if she is either falling apart or coming together. Time will tell. The unknown is all she has left. Her shadow is missing as if she is floating without an anchor or perhaps she is disappearing. She needs the strength of others but she is alone.

I wish we lived in a world where people never felt afraid or alone. It's something we should always work towards. If someone is hurting you, DO NOT BE SILENT! If you feel you know someone who is experiencing abuse, DO NOT BE SILENT! Love betrayed can only be healed with love. We have to look out for each other. We must also keep ourselves in check so we don't become part of the problem.

I no longer see my creations as only journal pages meant to be kept under lock and key. They are also my children, parts of me that are not mine to keep.
Do my stories matter?
Will I leave a legacy?
I hope so and attempt to create with love.

Prints of 'love' are available in my shop.

sister
People often ask me the meaning of my paintings. I usually turn the question around on them, asking what they think it means. Internally I will continue to debate why I do this. However, now that I'm trying to share my art more, I have decided to be a little more transparent. So here we go.

Picture
'sister' was created 9 years ago during a very transitional time in my life. Heartache had driven me to dig deep into my past with questions of how and why as I battled with feelings of weakness. The impulse to paint took over. I started to scan through my photo references and this pose spoke to me. It immediately got me thinking about my childhood. It was time to reflect on the formative years that had shaped the man I had become.

I realized that much of my life had been spent trying to please and gain the acceptance of others. The result was a lack of confidence and poor judgement. I began to see the fractures in some of my most personal relationships. I needed space. I needed to redesign my life and learn to set boundaries. It was time for some major changes. I packed my car with the things that mattered most and impulsively moved to San Diego. I arrived in California before 'sister' had even dried.
Her body is in the shape of a cross symbolizing the end of an era while hinting at a rebirth. The vibrant pink is a symbol of strength, passion, and love. Blue symbolizes divinity. Green represents a renewal. I imagine that she is daydreaming in a field of dandelions. The moment she closes her eyes she is transported to a place where she is free from expectations. There she can see more clearly what the past is trying to teach her. The lessons of childhood become seeds set free to find their new resting place where they will grow into a bright future. She accepts herself and she is ready to move forward.
