"exit" is an artistic representation of a bruise. More often than not, it is perceived simply as a bold colored koi fish and nothing more. But upon sharing its true meaning, people’s impressions of the painting change dramatically.

Ambiguity is sometimes highly important to an artist. This is one of those cases, so very little back story will be provided on what exactly inspired this work of art.

We have all had a bruise. They start as a visually hidden pain, but over time, as our blood slowly percolates beneath the surface of our skin, they reveal themselves. If severe enough, they appear in various shades of fuchsia, purple, and even black. The koi’s multilayered background is symbolic of this phase of bruising. As a bruise heals, it turns green, yellow and everything in between. It  looks unhealthy, but at this point the pain has dulled and full recovery is close at hand.

Interpret exit any way you would like. If you choose to apply the meaning shared, let it be a comfort to that you are not alone. Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever it is that brings you pain, literal or figurative,
I hope you find the exit.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Leave a comment.

The contrast between the fish and the background speak fluently. It tells me that no matter the energy around me that blinds my eyes from seeing the exit, I am the light. The koi fish symbolizes balance and perseverance to me. There’s a balance between losing your intended direction, and regaining your peace and prosperity. But altogether, this painting is just so satisfying, I want to eat it. The green tint was a beautiful decision in the fish to portray the message.

Imani, again your words fill my heart. "I am the light." The meaning you find in 'exit' has added new depth for me. Comments like this make me glad that I have opened up to talking about my art.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. You are so appreciated.
