through the eye of an artist

a concept

MILITIA
I am an artist, not a fashion designer or salesman. When the idea to add a little swag to the artist shoppe weaseled its way into my plans, the only way to approach it was as an artist. This felt a little tricky though. After all, my artwork is highly emotional and often rooted in some pretty heavy topics. This discouraged me but then I realized something. None of us can avoid the harsher realities of life and that makes somewhat melancholy looking art relatable, right?

ilitia is not just product, it is a concept. Three paintings have been chosen for this project (brother, sister, and resume). All of them are symbolic of common crossroads in life. (brother) Having to make a life changing decision, (sister) realizing unhealed wounds are keeping you from living fully in the present, and (resume) reaching rock bottom with no hope for the future; in desperate need of help . Welcome to the human condition.

Forks in the road are an opportunity for introspection and growth. As depicted in the paintings, you are a heap on the ground today but if you look closely, the hints of a better tomorrow are right in front of you. Hardship can be forged into custom armor for future combat. Making tough decisions is hard but the courage gained is invaluable. Living in the past is a trap but you can choose to honor it as lessons learned. Get better at riding out the lows by acknowledging that it is okay to accept or ask for help. Inner strength is something that grows whether earned, given, or borrowed.

It often feels as if we are losing touch with our ability to relate to one another. This is alarming. It is time to form a militia. Let the messages within the artwork be a reminder that we are much more alike than we are different. Life is a shared experience. With this understanding in our hearts we can band together, as human beings, in action against the chaos. The Militia Collection is about starting the conversation. Strolling around with a uniquely morose image across your chest can be a real conversation starter. You can tell those who comment that you purchased it from this really moody artist who, more than anything, wants to bring a little more conversation and empathy to the table we call life. I cannot help but feel that an interesting chat, triggered by an artsy article of clothing, is somehow charming and good. Perhaps, in some small way, it could help make the world a better place. A lofty hope but a well-intentioned one.

Thank you for reading. You know artists. We are always feeling so misunderstood. Thought I would try and explain myself, but just a little. There has to be some mystery. You should have fun interpreting the art for yourself too.

This is the most beautiful militia that could ever be formed. Full of love and expression.
When I look at your art, it brings me to a spot in my mind that is full of emotion. It feels like resume. But Im searching for the wounds. My heart understands the urgency of care. I feel it in my chest. My present mind is distracted by the habits.
Being able to express your pieces to strangers passing by is going to open up many doors. Emotions will be shared between the community. Words and thoughts will be communicated. Whether that be through our own minds as we sit a table away in a coffee shop or verbally. I love how wearing these pieces will make people feel and become one in a militia of experience.

Imani, I truly appreciate your thoughts. I am honored that my art touches you. When I painted resume, I was feeling much the way you are describing in your own life.

You really understand what I am trying to express and it makes sharing my ideas easier. Your words add deeper meaning to my work. Welcome to the militia of love and expression.

Thank you

A militia of love - I’m going to round up my neighbors and shoot them in the back of the head with compassion!

In all seriousness, I really like the rethinking of the word militia, which has gotten a bad wrap in recent years (probably fairly for some reasons). At the end of the day, the idea of the militia was a good one - that you have to rely on the people around you for help and protection. Which, in turn, goes back to this idea of inner strength sometimes being borrowed from others. We cant do it all ourselves but we’re all living on our own little cell phone islands. It’s hard to know how to get out of that. Maybe you can share what’s worked for you in a later post? Xx

Elizabeth, that's one way of saying it. Ahaha!

Sadly, the word militia has been accosted by so many bad actors and is seldom associated with anything good. I find added meaning in trying to take the word back to its roots. Community is at the heart of its origin and I really felt connected to the intent.

Humankind does seem to be so caught up in devices. That is why creating something that will hopefully lead to in person interactions seemed the logical way to go. I definitely plan to express more on the matter. I keep feeling it's so important. I crave new ways to articulate my thoughts on this issue.

MUCH LOVE!

I love the explanation behind The Militia Collection. The human condition is such a favored topic in art, it often shows up regardless of the artist intending it to be a focus. You found a to carry the concept onto the shoulders of the viewer that urges them to be part of the cause. A very compassionate cause. It’s actual interactive art, if you will.

Elizabeth, I'm so glad you love the explanation. I agree, whether an artist means to or not, art is totally a reflection of the human condition. Art is such a reflection of each era. That's why I love studying the history. It teaches you about people.

I really do want people to interact with the art. I see it as some kind of performance or installation art piece.

I appreciate you taking the time to interact!

Thank you!

I think it's great that the artist is using their work to start conversations about important topics.
